HVAC FAQs
Why is my AC not cooling?
If your AC is running but the air isn't cold, there are a few usual suspects:
Dirty Air Filter: A clogged filter restricts airflow, causing the evaporator coil to freeze up.
Thermostat Settings: Double-check that it’s set to "Cool" and the fan is on "Auto."
Refrigerant Leak: Low refrigerant levels mean the system can't remove heat effectively.
Dirty Condenser Unit: If the outdoor unit is covered in dirt or debris, it can’t release the heat it gathered from inside.
How often should I change my HVAC filters?
For standard 1" to 3" filters, the rule of thumb is every 3 months. However, you should change them every 30 to 60 days if:
You have pets.
Someone in the home has allergies or asthma.
You live in a particularly dusty area.
What size system do I need?
HVAC sizing is not a "bigger is better" situation. A system that is too large will "short-cycle," turning on and off rapidly, which wastes energy. A system that is too small will run constantly and still not reach the target temperature.
Why do I need maintenance on my HVAC system?
Regular maintenance (ideally twice a year—once for heating, once for cooling):
Extends Lifespan: Prevents premature system failure.
Lowers Energy Bills: Keeps the system running at peak efficiency.
Prevents Breakdowns: Identifies small issues before they become expensive emergency repairs.
Why is my furnace not heating?
If the heat won't kick on, check these first:
Thermostat Settings: Double-check that it’s set to "Heat" and the fan is on "Auto."
Thermostat Batteries: Sometimes the simplest fix is a fresh set of batteries.
Circuit Breaker: Check your electrical panel to ensure the furnace circuit hasn't tripped.
Why is my HVAC system making strange noises?
The sound is usually a clue to the problem:
Squealing: Likely a slipped or worn-out fan belt.
Banging/Clanging: Something might be loose or disconnected in the blower assembly.
Why do I have weak air flow?
If you feel barely a breeze coming from your vents, it's usually an obstruction or a motor issue:
Blocked Vents: Ensure furniture or curtains aren't covering the registers.
Duct Leaks: Holes or disconnected joints in your ductwork can vent air into your attic or crawlspace instead of your rooms.
Blower Motor: The motor that pushes the air might be failing.
